Top 6 Week 9 Matchups
More possible district titles are on the line in Week 9 as we look at the Top 6 matchups in the Denton County area.Â
West Mesquite vs. Creekview
It’s a matchup of two of the three undefeated teams in 6-5A Division I district play. This game last year marked a stretch of three straight losses for Creekview to end the season as it finished in third place and lost in the first round to Reedy.
This game was moved from a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday night to 2 p.m. on Thursday and leads off a doubleheader at Standridge Stadium.
Both teams put up more than 51 points a game while holding teams to less than 14 points, which means something will have to give. The area’s passing yards leader Cason Garcia will need to be in top form and get the ball to his playmakers to keep West Mesquite’s defense off-balance and on the field much more than the Creekview defense.
Hebron vs. Lewisville
Before Week 8, this game didn’t look like it would amount to much. After last week, this game now how a whole new level of intrigue.
Lewisville is just a game up in the standings above Hebron (and Braswell) and has absolutely owned this series since 2020, winning all five meetings.
Hebron has a blueprint now for how to beat Lewisville after the Farmers’ loss to Coppell. And considering the way Hebron was able to come back on Marcus in Week 6 and played tough with Guyer for a half, this game feels like it could be much closer than the 24.5 spread.Â
If Tre Williams can take care of the ball and the defense can get off the field, Lewisville should be fine. If Hebron can keep it close and maintain drives, an upset is very possible.
Ponder vs. Peaster
Ponder got a boost last week with its win over Iowa Park and Boyd taking down Bowie. That vaulted the Lions into 4th place and sit just a half-game back of Peaster.
Peaster is coming off its first loss of the season in a 6-point loss to Paradise. Since 2021, Peaster has won every matchup against Ponder by an average of 26.8 points.Â
The Ponder offense has to be on point in this one and get every bit of Tyson Price’s 32 total touchdowns and leverage the running game between Price, Gage Ersch and Kaden Allred.Â
This game isn’t quite the must-win for Ponder as it could have been, but an upset in this one would bolster its chances of getting in to the dance.
Pilot Point vs. Pottsboro
This game isn’t quite the de facto district championship but it does carry heavy implications for seeding. Both of these teams are undefeated in district play and still have a game against Whitesboro on the calendar, which sits with just one loss in the district standings.
Pilot Point averages 50 points a game and holds opponents to just 14.3 a game while Pottsboro averages 44.4 and allows 28.5.
The ground game is where the Bearcats make their mark and it worked very well against then-ranked Palmer a couple weeks ago in an upset win. Six players lead the charge in the rushing attack with Josh Chumley leading the way followed by Caden David.Â
Aubrey vs. Lake Dallas
When it’s all said and done for the 2025 regular season, this game will probably be for bragging rights. Both of these teams sit on the outside-looking-in for the playoff hunt with both teams sporting just one district win.Â
For the short-term, a win on Thursday can only help bolster each team’s chances but the prospects afterwards are slim at best.
Last year, this was a 30-point win for Aubrey at home, but what a difference a year makes. Aubrey has only cracked 30 points or more this season once and only score more than 20 twice. Meanwhile, Lake Dallas enters averaging 28 points a game and holding teams to just 19.4 points, including only giving up 31 to a high-power Panther Creek team last week.
Wakeland vs. Lone Star
Projecting this matchup to be as big as it is was probably on nobody’s bingo card. That all changed when Wakeland upended Reedy and then survived Frisco last week.Â
Lone Star on the other hand was projected to be here, and now this matchup looks to be a possible 5-5A DI district championship.
On average, both teams have won all of their games by a lot – Wakeland by an average of 20.5; Lone Star by an average of 35.3. And while Lone Star has rolled right through everyone, this year, it has mostly had a difficult time with Wakeland. Last year, Wakeland knocked off Lone Star 65-59. The year prior, Lone Star won on a thrilling last-second touchdown 35-31. In 2022, Wakeland took down Lone Star 38-10.
If this year’s edition is anything like those, we’re in for an interesting game on Friday night with the winner having the inside track for a district title.
